Do I Need a Battery with My Solar Panels?

The UK solar market is booming.

As of July 2025, over 1.73 million solar panel systems have been installed nationwide.

With solar adoption rising fast, more and more homeowners are asking how to squeeze the most value from their systems – and a Solar Battery (Battery storage) is quickly becoming a popular answer.

It’s one of the smartest ways to boost your energy savings. But it does raise a key question:

‘’Is solar enough on its own, or do I need a battery?’’

At JD Allen, we almost always recommend considering one. But in all honesty: batteries aren’t right for everyone

When done right, they can seriously amplify your system’s performance and long-term savings, but they are a big investment

So, are they essential? Or just a nice-to-have if your budget allows?

Let’s dive in

What Does a Solar Battery Do?

Solar batteries help you not only use more of the solar you generate, but also offer a huge boost to your savings and shorten your payback period.

Many people think once they’ve got solar panels on their roof – that’s it, they’ll barely pay for grid energy again.

But whilst solar panels do generate cheap, green electricity, panels alone won’t exactly take you off-grid. Because with a standard solar setup without a battery, you’ll only be able to use that electricity when the sun’s out.

That’s when your panels will generate it, during the day. You can then use what you can in real time, and then any excess energy you can’t use right away goes back to the grid (often for a small export payment).

Then when the sun sets, your home starts pulling its power from the grid again, and you go back to paying standard rates

But introducing battery storage to the mix changes all of that.

With a battery, instead of sending excess energy back to the grid, your battery system stores what you can’t use right away. Then once you need to use energy later in the day (when usage often peaks), you can use that stored solar energy instead of buying grid energy.

It’s like a power bank for your home. It’ll hold onto your solar energy so you can keep your home running efficiently, before needing a top up from the grid.

Even when you do need to buy energy from the grid, a solar battery allows you to buy that energy at a cheaper, overnight rate (even as low as 6.7p/kWh). Read more about that here.

Pros of Battery Storage

Adding a battery to a solar setup can have huge benefits to your daily life, and the energy efficiency of your home.

Bigger Savings – Buying less energy from the grid means spending much less money on energy bills. At JD Allen, we’ve found that our customers who combine solar panels and battery storage save on average 40% more than those with solar panels alone.

Protection from Price Hikes – When energy prices rise, you’ll be far less affected. As you lean less on the grid, a sudden price increase has a smaller impact on your bills

Energy Independence – You can run your home independently from the grid for much longer. This is particularly useful if you use lots of energy during peak hours, like the morning or evening when solar alone won’t cover it.

Flexible Options – Batteries aren’t just one size fits all. There’s plenty to choose from with different storage capacities, functionality’s and a wide range in prices. Plus, even if you don’t get one right away, they can be added to solar systems further down the line

Because of this, we’d always recommend a battery where possible – especially if you want flexibility and security down the line.

That said, there are some potential downsides to bear in mind.

Downside to Consider

Like we said, we’d almost always recommend a battery, but there may be times when they aren’t a perfect fit.

Here’s what to weigh up:

Cost – Whilst the long term savings are worth it, adding a battery does increase the upfront cost of a solar installation. They typically add £2,500 – £7,000 to a system, depending on the battery you choose.

Your Energy Usage – If you’re a low energy user, adding a battery may mean it takes you longer to see a return. Additionally, if most of your energy usage is in the middle of the day, and you don’t use much in the morning/evening, then a battery may not be as essential, as you’ll use solar as it’s generated.

Ventilation Space – Batteries shouldn’t be boxed in. Manufacturers recommend installing them in open, ventilated areas, like a large garage or outside. If you’re struggling for space, then a battery may be difficult. (We always help customers find the safest, most practical spot)

Who is a Solar Battery Best For?

We’d almost always recommend a battery because of their huge cost benefits. But in some situations, a battery is an absolute no-brainer.

Some homes are crying out for battery storage, you as the homeowner may just not have realised it yet.

If you’re a family with high energy use, you simply can’t ignore including battery storage in your solar setup. The more energy you’re using the more you’ll benefit from:

  1. Using more of the electricity you generate
  1. Buying cheap, off-peak energy from the grid

(Insert study on battery storage benefits)

And it’s not only families that are high energy users. If you work from home chances are you’re using consistently high energy throughout the day, not just at peak solar hours.

Battery storage is particularly useful for ‘Work-from-homers’ as it means you can use your accumulated solar energy over a longer period, not just when you’re generating the most.

But even if you’re not necessarily the highest energy user in the world, if you’re just looking to plan for the future and want to save as much as possible, battery storage is key to help you get there.

It’ll keep your costs consistently low each month, allowing for more predictable bills that give you back over your energy for the long term.

So, do you need a battery?

The short answer is, it depends on you.

A battery can be a huge boost to:

  • Your savings
  • Solar self-consumption
  • Reducing your reliance on the grid
  • Planning for a cheaper, energy efficient future

Especially if you’re a high energy user, you work from home, or if you want to reduce reliance on the grid.

But they might not be essential for every home. They’d benefit nearly every situation, but vital? Sometimes not.

It’s important that when you’re thinking about switching to solar, you’re speaking to an expert who’s actually honest about what makes sense for your setup.

At JD Allen, we’ve completed over 1,000 installations of Solar PV and Battery systems. We always give customers real, honest advice that doesn’t force you into a system that doesn’t truly benefit you.

If you want to know a little more about what’s best for your home, and whether you really need a battery system or not, just ask us a question on the button below

We’ll get back to you in 24 hours and get you far closer to cutting your energy bills, and carbon footprint down then you were before!

Do you need a solar battery?

It depends on your goals. If you’re a higher energy user, and want to maximise savings, a solar battery is the way to go. If your home doesn’t use much energy, a battery may be less needed, but will still save you money.

How much does a solar battery cost?

A battery typically costs £2,500 – £7,000, depending on the brand you choose.

What does a solar battery do?

Solar batteries, or battery storage enable solar panel owners to store any excess solar their panels generate, and then use it later on. They also enable homeowners to buy energy from the grid at cheap overnight rates. That energy can be stored, then used during the day when prices are high.
